Bengaluru: Palike cracks the whip on illegal hoardings

The joint commissioners of eight BBMP zones have been told to bring the illegal flex banner menace under control in their jurisdictions.

BENGALURU: Be it a religious festival or a birthday of a politician both sides of the road are festooned with large, illegal flex banners, posters and cutouts across the city.

To restore the aesthetics of the city and to curb the menace during the Assembly elections, the BBMP has intensified its drive against flex boards.

The joint commissioners of eight BBMP zones have been told to bring the illegal flex banner menace under control in their jurisdictions.

BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad said, “Removal of illegal flex banners is an ongoing drive. All the zonal joint commissioners have been taking action against the guilty and most of the responsibility will be on ward engineers."

Asked what action has been taken against those who have put up flexes without prior permission from the BBMP, he said, “Those who wish to put up flex banners should approach the concerned zonal office and apply for permission by paying a nominal fee. After reviewing the submitted application, permission will be granted by giving a specific number to the applicant."

The number should be mandatorily displayed on the banners, which have to be removed by the applicant as per the permission granted, Mr Prasad said.

The civic body has the powers to slap criminal cases against those failing to fall in line, he said. With elections around the corner, the drive will be taken up with full force, he added.
