Wrap-up: NIA steps in to probe mishap
The Hirakhand Express, the lone train connecting a major part of South Odisha and part of Chhattisgarh, derailed at Kuneru railway station in Vizianagram at late evening on January 22, leaving 40 passengers dead and over 100 injured.
The mishap has been termed as the biggest along the East Coast Railway zone.
The impact was such that 10 of the bodies recovered were found headless and many beyond recognition.
While the CID and Railway Safety Commissioner visited the spot just a day after the incident to ascertain the reason for the mishap, the National Investigation Agency has also been roped in to probe the derailment.
The NIA had earlier requested the Union home ministry to hand over the probe into the East Champaran case with preliminary investigation pointing to the role of ISI in terror hits on railway infrastructure in India including the derailment of a train near Kanpur last year.
This was following revelations by Bihar Police that the ISI was behind train derailments and the Pakistan agency had used the Nepal route to target the Indian Railways.
