Trade Unions' reject 19 per cent wage hike

The talks remained inconclusive without any agreement & the next round of talks is scheduled to be held at the TEA premises on February 5.

Tirupur: The joint committee of garment manufacturers offered a 19 per cent wage hike for the next four years to the subcontracted powerloom unit workers, but the trade unions rejected it and strongly stayed course on their demand of a 100 per cent wage hike.

The wage revision talk was convened between the garment manufacturers and trade unions at the Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA) premises here on Saturday to sign the wage revision pact. Following the talks, S Duraisamy, Chairman of the joint committee of industrial associations of TEA, SIHMA, TEAMA, TEKMA, KNITcMA and SIMKA, said, “We offered to hike the wages above the basic salary by ten per cent for the first year and three per cent each for the next three years respectively.”

However, the joint committee of trade unions for AITUC, CITU, MLF, LPF, ATP, INTUC, BMS and HMS, refused to accept the offered hike. The joint committee was insistent on a 100 per cent wage hike, as it was recommended based on the government’s guidelines of fixing the basic salary.

The talks remained inconclusive without any agreement and the next round of talks is scheduled to be held at the TEA premises on February 5.
