Nellore: A mob attacked the I-Town police station here and later pelted stones at the car of Nellore SP Gajarao Bhupal late on Saturday night. Police fired two rounds in the air to quell the mob. According to sources, the group was protesting remarks the SP had allegedly made during an awareness programme held in One-Town police station area on Friday.
As tensions ran high, Nellore City DSP J.V. Ramudu came to offer an apology on behalf of Mr Bhupal to cool tempers. The mob wanted the SP himself to come down and apologise for his alleged remarks. When Mr Bhupal reached the spot, the mob pelted his car with stones. Nellore Mayor Abdul Azeez rushed to the spot to try and contain the situation.
Nellore joint collector A. Md. Imtiaz suspected that some elements had misinterpreted the SP’s message during the awareness programme and instigated some people to violence. Sources said that the SP, during the awareness programme on Friday in the One-Town police station area had advised the youth not to get attracted to the forces trying to misguide them in the backdrop of activities of ISIS operatives in the country.
