Church St blast: NIA searches Afridi's house

House owner was questioned and statements recorded. Before Afridi's marriage, his friend used to stay with him.

BENGALURU: The NIA officials, who arrested Mohammed Rafeeq alias Alam Jeb Afridi in connection with the Church Street blast, took him to his house in Vinayaka Nagar in Naganathapura in Parappana Agrahara and conducted an inquest on Saturday.

Police sources said that the terror suspect was taken to his house, where he was living for the last three years, on Saturday afternoon.

“His house was searched. The house owner, Ashraf, was questioned and his statements were recorded. Before Afridi got married, his friend was staying with him and he moved out after the marriage. He will be questioned as part of the investigation,” an official said. More than 50 policemen were deployed as a precaution.

NIA sleuths also took Afridi to the blast site on Church Street on Thursday. “He revealed during the interrogation that he purchased the material required for the Church Street bomb from Tumakuru. He was also taken to the shops in Tumakuru from where he purchased the material,” the official said.

‘Didn’t know he was terrorist’
LJP chief Ramvilas Paswan’s son-in-law rebelling against him, the son-in-law of Hindustani Awam Morcha chief Jitan Ram Manjhi also went against him and filed nomination as an Independent candidate.

Devendra Manjhi filed nomination as an Independent from Bodh Gaya (reserved SC seat). BJP has fielded its sitting MLA Shyamdeo Pasw-an from the seat. Devendra said he had to enter the fray ‘under pressure from the Mahadalit samaj,’ but bode no ill feeling against his father-in-law, ex-CM Jitan Ram Manjhi.
