Chennai youth in spot for burning tricolour

Police sources said that they were pursuing the complaints and are in the process of tracking the youth.

Chennai: A youth, Dilipan Mahendran, burnt the national flag, and his posting of the same in Facebook went viral in social networking platforms including WhatsApp, on Saturday. The postings began trending in his Facebook page and made its way to other platforms since he posted it on Friday night and took it off after a while.

The 25-year-old who is a self-claimed Periyarist took part in a protest, held at Valluvarkottam, seeking sufficient action against the death of 3 SVS naturopathy and yoga sciences college in Villupuram and also against those responsible for the death of Hyderabad based research scholar Rohith Vemula. He had posted the images of his participation in his own page.

A section continued to support Dhilipan while some hurled verbal abuses in every form on social networking sites. The supporters justified the action by questioning integrity of those self-claimed patriots as to what they were doing when the flag was desecrated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tennis star Sania Mirza, and bikini models on numerous occasions.

Meanwhile, two persons including private airlines pilot C.R. Naveenkumar lodged a complaint with the city police.

Speaking to DC, Naveenkumar said that he was upset with the act of Dilipan. “I preferred a complaint, so that no such things are repeated in the future. Cops told me that my complaint will be taken up”, he said.

Online complaints pouring into city police’s FB page were also being acknowledged and being forwarded to the cyber crime for further action. City Police sources said that they were pursuing the complaints and are in the process of tracking the youth.
