62 PG med seats in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
Hyderabad: The Medical Council of India has increased 62 PG medical seats in Telugu states for the 2016-17 academic year, 42 in Telangana and 20 in AP. TS has 620 PG medical seats, and AP 516. Over 10,000 students take the PG medical entrance test every year. There is huge shortage of PG medical seats in the two states, and each seat in the management quota costs crores of rupees.
MCI teams inspected medical colleges in December in both the states to check for infrastructure and availability of faculty. While proposals were submitted for an increase by 100 seats, the MCI approved 62 for both the states. Of them, 30 seats have been given with ‘conditional approval’; the colleges have been asked to rectify the deficiencies pointed out by the MCI with regard to faculty and infrastructure in three months.
If that is not done, the seats will not be allotted. The NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijaya-wada, will continue to hold the joint entrance exam for both the states for PG medical admissions. All the PG medical seats would continue to be affiliated to NTRUHS. The Kaloji University of Health Science set up by the Telangana state government is yet to become operational.
