Gitam engineering in legal soup

Varsity hasn't secured AICTE consent.

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Council of Higher Education has served a notice on Gitam University for its engineering courses offered for 2019-20 as it has not secured permission from the All India Council of Technical Education.

AICTE permission is mandatory for technical education colleges which which certification of the students cannot be done.

Mr B. Goutham, president of the Union of Engineering Colleges said, “AICTE permission has been made compulsory by the Centre. Deemed universities have to get this permission. This entails adhering to parameters like faculty, technical staff for teaching, presence in colleges, laboratories or workshops held and the process followed for admission. These are then monitored from time to time.”

Gitam University had moved the High Court for exemption for 2018-19 stating it was a deemed university and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council had accredited it with A grade. The Supreme Court had made AICTE approval mandatory from 2018-19 but the university had asked for an exemption.

TSCHE chairman Prof. T. Papi Reddy said, “We have issued a notice according to the Supreme Court order. The process is important for all universities in the country.”

Gitam University is ranked in the world as 1001+ university.

University founder and AP Legislative Council member Dr M.V.V.S. Murthi died in a car accident in the United States in October.

The management refused to comment on the TSCHE notice stating that they will look into all the aspects and seek remedies accordingly.

Later, in a statement, Gitam University in its statement has stated that they are a deemed university and are governed by regulations of University Grants Commission and Union ministry of human resources development.

The notification by the TS government will be countered by the university.
