CHENNAI: The Arignar Anna Zoological Park's Zoo school concluded on Saturday its education camps called Zoo Ambassador Camp for school children initiated in April this year, as a summer camp activity.
According to officials, over 150 students participated in the camp, and it had a good feedback from children and parents, following which a similar camp was organised in December 2018 as 'Winter Camp — Zoo Ambassadors'.
In various batches, students were exposed to the mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, butterflies and small insects housed in the park by the zoo biologists and veterinary doctors.
“This is a novel initiative and first of its kind in the country. Trained students were given titles as 'zoo ambassadors'. They were given with zoo passport, which permits these children to visit the zoo, free of entry fee 10 times a year. These students were provided with animal book and other study materials,” added the officials.
Close to 400 children were trained as 'zoo ambassadors' in the camps held at Arignar Anna Zoological Park this year, added the official.
This year's last batch of 65 students was provided with certificates and zoo passports on Saturday at Arignar Anna Zoological Park premises, on successful completion of the camp, said another official.
The valediction event was presided by Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Director, Yogesh Singh. Deputy Director Sudha Ramen, other veterinary doctors and biologists were also present.
