Chennai: Missing girl child traced in 24 hours

Girl found safe with elderly woman.

CHENNAI: A four-year-old girl child who went missing in Kothavalchavadi on Thursday was rescued within 24 hours and handed over to her parents. According to the police, Jayalakshmi (4), is the daughter of a daily wage labour Ravi (29) and Selvi (26) of Washermenpet.

Meanwhile on Thursday Selvi had left the child with her mother Kanniammal, at Kothavalchavadi.

Police said Jayalakshmi who was playing outside the house on Athiyappan Nayakan street on Thursday evening went missing. After searching for the child in the locality, the couple lodged a complaint at Kothavalchavadi police station on Friday morning.

The Kothavalchavadi police filed a missing case and recovered the CCTV footage from the locality. when police saw an unidentified woman was found carrying Jayalakshmi, police circulated the images of the woman and the kid.

Meanwhile, on Friday evening the railway police at Chennai Central noticed an elderly woman standing with a child in an unusual manner. During the inquiry, she told police the kid came to her calling her grandmother, so she picked her up. Police rescued the child from her and handed the child over to childline officers.

“However, after railway police received child missing messages on WhatsApp with Jayalakshmi’s photos, they alerted Kothavalchavadi police that they rescued her and that she is safe with Childline. Her parents were taken to the home where the child had been kept and they identified her as Jayalakshmi, after which the child was sent with them,” said an investigation officer.

However, the Kothavalchavadi police did not arrest the elderly woman claiming that the woman wanted to hand over the child to the parents, but not knowing what to do she came with the child to the railway station.
