BENGALURU: President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the festivities and social activities of Adamya Chetana Seva Utsava, planned as part of the centenary celebrations of the National High School (NHS) at the school grounds in Basavangudi on Saturday.

Established in 1917 by renowned theosophist, social activist and former president of Indian National Congress Dr Annie Besant, NHS has played a pivotal role in the national freedom movement. “The establishment of the school goes hand-in-hand with our fight against British imperialism. The innovative plans of the school, including mid-day meals scheme, providing vocational training, nurturing physical culture, impetus on theatre and such, which were later adopted by the central government as part of its education reforms, proves the foresight of the then National Education Society (NES) led by H. Narasimhaiah (HN),” said Dr A.H. Ram Rao, president of the National Education Society of Karnataka (NES).

Imparting education to more than 15 lakh students from different walks of life, who are now placed around the globe, the institution has also been the alma mater to the ever-growing list of notable alumni, including former international cricketers E.A.S. Prasanna, B.S. Chandrasekhar, Anil Kumble, incumbent ISRO Chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar, actors Ramesh Aravind, Srinath, Arjun Sarja and Vishnuvardhan.

Governor Vajubhai Vala, CM Siddaramaiah and Union Minister Anant Kumar will be among the dignitaries at the inaugural function, which is expected to host a crowd of more than 4,000, including former principals, teachers and students of the institution.
