Beggars can be choosers with jail department jobs

The prisons department will be providing short-term training to them. Apart from free accommodation, they will get food and salaries.

HYDERABAD: If the plans of the Telangana prisons department fructify, beggars, who are rescued, will work at petrol bunks and Ayurveda spas in the state.

The prisons department will be providing short-term training to them. Apart from free accommodation, they will get food and salaries.

Mr V.K. Singh, director-general of prisons, said that the department has rescued 741 male and 311 female beggars so far. “It is an ongoing process, and some were released on personal bond that they would not resort to begging again,” said the official.

“The men are housed at Chanchalguda and the women are kept at Cherlapally. After identifying the families, we will keep them at one place,” he said.

The jail department will train those who are permanently staying at shelter homes. “We are opening new fuel stations and Ayurveda centers and are expanding the services in the jail. After giving basic training, we will place them at our centres,” said Mr Singh.

He said that the department is rewarding the persons who pass on information about beggars. “Our patrol vehicles with volunteers of NGOs are bringing beggars from the street to shelter houses. If anyone spots a beggar, he can inform the control room. We will pay him '500,” the official said.
