Cyclone Vardah: Central team report to be ready in 2 days

Experts visit Kasimedu fishing harbour to access cyclone damage.

Chennai: An inter-ministerial central team, which arrived here on Wednesday to assess the damages due to Cyclone Vardah, continued their second day visit to the affected areas on Thursday.

The nine-member team visited farmlands in Kancheepuram and also interacted with fishermen in north Chennai and Tiruvallur districts.

Earlier in the day, the team led by Home Ministry Joint Secretary Praveen Vashista first visited the Kasimedu fishing harbour. The state animal husbandry and fisheries secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, who accompanied the team explained the preventive measures that were taken by the state to reduce the damage to fishing boats.

The damage to boats, fishing nets and the cases of fishermen who went missing from the sea during the cyclone were also discussed. The team after inspecting the fishing harbour also assessed the infrastructure damage in Royapuram.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan at the state secretariat, Praveen Vashista said that his team had done an in-depth assessment and the report in this regard will be handed over to the centre in a couple of days.

Later in the day, the team left for Tiruvallur district to inspect paddy fields and the banana groves that were damaged in the recent squalls. The central team also inspected the damaged huts in Kallukadaimedu and Vellodai.

In Kancheepuram, the high level team reviewed the infrastructure damage to electric cables, overhead water tanks and water supply lines due to heavy winds. The team also took stock of uprooted trees in Chengalpet, Aathoor and Oragadam. The team also interacted with the villagers of Ponneri and Chengalpet.

Commissioner of revenue administration K. Satyagopal accompanied the central team during their visit to Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts.
