AIADMK promises to keep up Jayalalithaa's legacy
CHENNAI: The AIADMK general council passed resolutions to condole the death of its former general secretary J. Jayalalithaa, besides listing her achievements and promising to carry on her legacy.
A resolution outlined the entry of Jayalalithaa into politics, her functioning as the party’s general secretary from 1988 to 2016 to strengthen the party. Under Jayalalithaa, the party won successive elections, a record after 32 years.
Another resolution listed Jayalalithaa’s achievements as the Chief Minister for six terms and recalled her struggle to increase the storage height of Mullaiperiyar dam and the gazetting of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s final order.
It cited the Assembly resolution demanding referendum among Sri Lankan Tamils to decide their own political destiny and described them as a milestone in the self determination struggle of island Tamils.
The resolution also listed the cradle baby scheme, rain water harvesting scheme, free rice scheme, eight grams of gold for mangalsutra and conversion of Tamil Nadu into a power surplus state. It also listed the free laptops, cycles, uniforms and Amma canteens and protecting 69 per cent reservation as other key achievements.
Another resolution thanked the centre for making all arrangements for the funeral procession of Jayalalithaa. It also wanted the installation of Jayalalithaa’s bronze statue in Parliament, declaration of her birth anniversary as national farmers day besides seeking Bharat Ratna, Nobel prize and Magsaysay award for her.
