Vijayawada: Citizens tell civic body to improve air quality
VIJAYAWADA: The Taxpayers Association on Thursday apprised the Vijayawada municipal commissioner of the various problems haunting citizens and told him to take immediate action.
Later, speaking to the media, Association president V. Sambi Reddy said that negligence of officials and the slow progress of development works across the city have had a direct impact on the quality of air in the city. The Association also accused the Municipal authorities of failing to complete the ongoing drainage works, storm water works and said that dust rising from the dug pits is creating havoc with the health of commuters. The Association pointed out that many of the blacktop roads have been damaged due to the rains and were contributing to the rise in air pollution.
Association secretary M.V. Anjaneyulu said that the dust on the Budameru Bridge was also causing air pollution as the blacktop road was not yet laid. He said that the Singhnagar dumping yard works were pending and there were other issues that are turning the city air unbreathable.
Mr Anjaneyulu said, “The other major problem the denizens are facing these days is of sound pollution. A few people and the youth prefer high-end bikes and the company fitted silencers are replaced with fancy silencers emitting sound that is more than the audible range creating sound pollution. He said that human ear can bear up to 70 decibels but the fancy silencers emit sounds that cross the 170 to 200 decibel mark, creating panic among passers-by.
The Association demanded the VMC commissioner to take an immediate action and control air and sound pollution in the city.
