Medical negligence case rocks BBMP meet
Bengaluru: At the BBMP council meeting here on Thursday, members cutting across party lines raised the issue of alleged medical negligence by doctors at a hospital in Coles Park, while treating a Corporator.
Independent Corporator Elumalai V was admitted at Santosh hospital to undergo a minor surgery for removal of boil under his nose. But he suffered heart attack and lapsed into coma.
The corporators demanded action against the guilty doctors and immediate closure of the hospital.
The issue was raised by the leader of ruling party Shivaraj at the monthly council meeting. He said, "On November 9, Sagayara Puram ward Corporator Elumalai had gone to Santosh Hospital for removal of a boil. Doctors advised him to undergo surgery the next day."
But due to medical negligence, he is now in coma, Shivaraj said.
Support Shivaraj, leader of opposition Padmanabha Reddy said that Elumalai was currently battling for his life.
On the day of surgery, Elumalai’s friends grew suspicious looking at the impatient doctors and staff. When they grilled the doctors they were told that Elumalai had heart attack and has been rushed to Vikram Hospital for further treatment.
Members said that if this is the case for a corporator, who represents thousands of people, then what would be the case of ordinary citizens. Former mayor Manjunath Reddy remarked that many hospitals in the city have become ‘death centres’.
After listening to corporators, Mayor Gangambike said the incident will be thoroughly investigated and action will be taken, so that people can visit hospitals without fear.
