Warangal: Several laws intended to protect the rights of women were enacted by the government but with the women being unaware of them, it is impossible to implement them, observed Tripurana Venkataratnam, the chairperson of State Women’s Commission. She was speaking at the two-day awareness programme on Women Rights and Laws, organised by District Welfare Department, at a private engineering college in Laknepalli near Narsampet on Wednesday. She explained about laws related to ban on dowry, property rights and child marriages.
“Even in this time and age, attacks on women continue because of the beliefs of people. Only when the society believes in what is right, these attacks will stop. Stringent laws and punishment should be implemented against the culprits. But most importantly, the women must know their rights and have the minimum legal knowledge,” she said. Warangal Rural district joint collector M. Haritha opined that there is a need for speedy action in case of girl trafficking and dowry harassment. She said the concerned officials must take immediate action as soon as they come to know about the incident.
State civil supplies corporation chairman Peddi Sudharshan Reddy said there is a need to conduct such awareness camps in the interior villages of the state. He asked the women to play an active role in all the fields including politics. High Court advocated Vijetha gave a powerpoint presentation on laws against harassment of married women, sexual assaults, dowry deaths, registration of marriage etc. Narsampet ACP Sunitha Mohan, Women and child welfare department RJD Ramulu, DRDO Shekar Reddy, RDO Ravi, ICDS RO Kamarunnisa Begum and others were present.
