Internet reach: State right among top five

Karnataka has emerged among the top five states to have highest service area in terms of internet penetration.

BENGALURU: Karnataka has emerged among the top five states to have highest service area in terms of internet penetration, according to a recent data provided by Telecom regulation Authority of India (TRAI).

At the end of June 2017, the state has a total of 27.96 million internet subscribers with 6.62 million from rural areas and 21.34 million being urban subscribers.

The other states who made it to the top five include Maharashtra (35.46 million subscribers), Tamil Nadu (33.89 million), Andhra Pradesh (33.21 million) and Uttar Pradesh (29.54 million).

“The internet requirement for the people is more now a days and everybody wants more data usage. With the competition among the telecom industry now, every company is trying to provide internet at cheaper rate and faster speed which is making more people to subscribe,” said Venkatesh, a local telecom vendor in Rajajinagar.

Geetha Ramesh, a professor, felt the growing demand is the result of growing need and also the exposure that internet has provided these days. "No matter the age group, location, internet is definitely becoming a part of everyone's daily life, be it for need or greed," she added.

According to the TRAI report, at the end of June 2017, India as a whole had 431.21 million Internet subscribers, out of which 137.39 million subscribers were from rural areas.

Raksha (32), a corporate employee said, “Internet is the most important thing to do any work like bank transaction, money transfer, booking tickets or even paying bills. You can sit at one place and do all this if you have internet.”

An official from TRAI said, “Most of the economic activity is dependent on the internet and that is why even government is trying to push the digital transactions. Without connectivity you can’t do any transaction."
