Guntur: People attack banks having no currency

People are becoming angry over the absence of cash in the banks.

GUNTUR: People are becoming angry over the absence of cash in the banks. Some people locked Andhra Bank branch at Eepuru on Monday angry over the absence of money and similar situation prevailed in many banks on Tuesday. Some angry public tried to break the glass panes of the State Bank of India at old Amaravati and account holders staged protest at Prattipadu in Guntur district on Tuesday.

The people of old Amaravati and adjacent villages rushed to Andhra Bank at 9 am to withdraw and deposit money in large numbers. The bank was opened at 10.30 am but the staff opened only a small door which restrained the public from entering the bank. The angry public broke the glass panes beside the door and damaged chairs and tables in anger. They alleged that they are coming to the bank from far off places but of no use as the bank was displaying ‘No cash’ board. Amaravati SI, K. Venkata Prasad rushed to the bank with policemen and controlled the angry public.

Andhra Bank manager R.S. Ravindranath said that there was only a limited stock of currency notes. So the bank is failing to give the desired amount to the public. He added that despite crisis, the bank is trying to give Rs 4,000 to the account holders and are trying to get more currency. Similarly, the public became angry in the banks at Guntur city and argued with banks staff and officials demanding to disburse currency notes. The bank officials said that they already informed about the need for currency and are waiting for it.
