Tackle social issues behind health problems, says Guv
Thrissur: There is a social issue behind every health problem which needs to be identified and solved, Governor P. Sathasivam has said. He was speaking after inaugurating the Principals’ çonclave at Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) at Mulamkunathukkavu on Monday.
“Imparting knowledge to students is certainly great, but engaging society with knowledge and solution is a greater service,” he said.
Health minister K.K. Shailaja, who spoke at the function which was attended by principals of medical colleges from across the state, said that medical students should not be brought under mental stress over their internal marks.
“I have been seeing some issues with the internal marks in which students with very high marks in examinations are given less mark in internals. Such torture will affect them and make them rough when they become doctors and interact with patients,” she noted.
KUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr. M.K.C. Nair said that more focus needed to be given on research and that the university was keen on improving the research standards by conducting programmes for the researchers.
“The research needs to be made a part of service delivery and the findings of the research have to be made helpful to the masses. Other than that, the varsity has come up with students’ guidance and support programmes along with addiction-free campus,” Mr Nair said.
MLA Anil Akkara and Pro-VC Dr A. Nalinakshan among others were present. Principal of Kozhi-kode Medical College Dr V.R. Rajendran received award for his work to contain the Nipah virus during the outbreak.
