Hyderabad: No clause to protect trees on footpath

The issue has been brought to the notice of all nodal agencies on several occasions.

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation's bio-diversity wing blames the engineering wing of the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation and Hyderabad Metro Rail, who know nothing about plants or the environment, for the danger posed to trees by the laying of new footpaths.

A senior GHMC official working in the urban bio-diversity wing pointed out that there is no mention of protecting trees in the tender notification.

He said the contractors have been taking advantage of this omission to lay footpaths in the city without any regard for the danger posed to saplings and trees, which need space left around them for air and water.

This omission should immediately be rectified, he said.

“The issue has been brought to the notice of all nodal agencies on several occasions. Poor engineering techniques followed in footpath construction have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of trees over the years,” the official added.
