Bengaluru: After repeated complaints from the public that they are not aware of the days when wet and dry waste is collected by garbage collection vehicles and pourakarmikas, the BBMP is now planning to put up boards across all wards, stating the days and types of waste collected.
The residents had raised the issue several times earlier, but no action had been taken. The BBMP found out that one of the major reasons for garbage piles on roads is that garbage collection vehicles collect wet and dry waste on alternate days. At times, wet or dry waste is collected on two consecutive days confusing people, who dumped garbage on roads.
On days when dry waste is collected, garbage vehicles do not accept wet waste and people said wet waste stinks if kept for more than a day in their house or on the premises and they ended up dumping it in public places. The BBMP hopes that information boards on collection days will stop citizens from dumping garbage on roads.
A senior officer from the BBMP solid waste management department told Deccan Chronicle, “During an inspection, residents complained to the mayor about lack of information on the days when separate waste is collected. Assigning different days for collecting different waste helps us keep tabs on garbage contractors and pourakarmikas, as we have heard that pourakarmikas collect waste at their own will.”
He said, “Info boards in all wards will help reduce littering on roads. We know that one cannot predict the waste generated at a house, but at least one can be prepared to store it or avoid a particular type of waste that day.”
