PM Modi lauds Dr Veerendra Heggade's digital economy

Women in the village may be literate or illiterate but today, 12 lakh of them have become part of the digital economy, PM Modi said.

Mangaluru: Lauding the efforts of Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr Veerendra Heggade in promoting a digital and cashless economy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his initiatives were a befitting reply to questions raised doubting the success of the digital economy.

Mr Modi was in Ujire to participate in the programme to distribute 12 lakh RuPay cards, launch Digitized SHG member transactions and also release the logo of the ‘Preserve Mother Earth’ campaign. Expressing unhappiness over the criticism of the digital economy, he said, “During the post demonetisation sessions of parliament, those who claimed to be experts in economics had questioned the success of digital transactions and a cashless economy. They claimed that there was poverty and illiteracy and a cashless economy was impossible. But today Dharmadhikari Dr Veerendra Heggade has provided a reply to all these questions," he said.

“Women in the village may be literate or illiterate but today, 12 lakh of them have become part of the digital economy. They have decided to go for cashless transactions through the RuPay and BHIM app,” Mr Modi said.

Speaking about the benefits of government e-Marketing (GeM), Mr Modi asked the Karnataka government to be part of it.

“GeM provides a platform for products of SHGs. The SHGs have to register in the portal and the government will order the goods it needs and buy from them. This will help the small producer, everything would be done transparently," he said adding that already, 15 states have become part of the initiative.
