Hyderabad: Tinnitus cases on upsurge among youths
HYDERABAD: Cases of tinnitus are rising in Hyderabad especially among people within the age group of 20 to 30 years due to prolonged exposure to mobile phones, earplugs and loud noise, found a random survey carried out in the city.
The state capital is now witnessing 80 to 90 instances of tinnitus at ENT centres every month, which was not the case a decade ago.
Tinnitus is the ringing sound that a patient feels in the ear. It can be very irritating as those suffering from this ailment feel they are hearing a sound, which is actually not there.
Dr G. Srinivas Reddy, senior consultant and ENT surgeon at Apollo Hospital, explained, “There has been a rise in cases of tinnitus in the last decade. Now, every month, we are finding that 20 to 30 patients have this problem. Tinnitus in the younger generation is due to excessive exposure to noise and loud music. They are constantly listening to music on their phones. That is one of the reasons for developing this condition. It is treatable though.”
The prevalence of this condition was largely in the elderly population and diabetes patients.
Dr Janardhan Rao, an ENT surgeon, stated, “It was a condition that arose mostly due to aging. The other reasons could be injury to the ear, circulatory problems in the body and diabetes. These are the major groups who suffer from this problem.”
