Dog census to be completed by mid-October, says BBMP

BBMP officials said it has completed close to 50 per cent of the census work.

Bengaluru: After a gap of seven years, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has commenced dog census in the city. The civic body has roped in Worldwide Veterinary Services (WVS) and Mission Rabies to conduct the survey. BBMP officials said it has completed close to 50 per cent of the census work.

BBMP commissioner Mr Anil Kumar said the census work is being carried out using an app-based scientific survey and has also pointed out that the survey will include only the stray dogs and the free-roaming dogs. The survey is expected to be completed by mid-October, he said.

“We initially aimed to take up the census work by employing face recognition technology. But, we had to give it up as our field officials faced issues implementing it,” a BBMP official said. The census will cover male, female, nurtured and non-nurtured canines and the data will be shared with the Animal Husbandry department and Animal Birth Control centres.

“The intention of the census is to have an effective Animal Birth Control programme as we can know the distribution of the stray dogs in each ward,” he added. In 2012, the civic body had taken up dog census and had identified the presence of 1.85 lakh stray dogs in the city.
