BTM Layout, dark and dangerous

Residents say that they are dependent on lights from commercial outlets or residences to guide themselves through the stretch.

Bengaluru: Even though Mayor Gangambike had directed corporators to replace streetlights with LED bulbs, there are areas that are still poorly lit or do not have adequate lighting for residents. The stretch from the Udupi Garden signal in BTM Layout till Chocolate factory Road is poorly lit. Residents say that they are dependent on lights from commercial outlets or residences to guide themselves through the stretch.

“There are several issues that the civic agency needs to work on. The first is streetlights which need to be resolved. There are several lanes in BTM Layout that are either poorly-lit or don’t have any lights at all. Nobody feels safe on these roads. Often rowdies lurk in the night and there is a real threat of residents getting mugged,” said Mr G. Santosh, a local resident. There have been complaints of drainage slabs caving in and pedestrians getting injured as they cannot see the footpaths.

“The BBMP should have repaired all the slabs but they did not do so. When one moves towards S.G. Palya things get really bad. In poorly lit areas, pedestrians are the worst victims. On Chocolate Factory Road, the debris was not removed for days after BWSSB's work got over and this resulted in an accident,” said Mr Akshay Shashtri, a resident of Marutinagar.

Twitter was flooded with requests to repair the roads near the Udupi Garden Junction.

“Ministers should navigate between Udupi Garden through 29th Main, Anugraha Layout and then exit via Bilekahalli to know what the commuters go through every day. The condition is worsening on a daily basis,” said Ms Ankita, a local resident.

The residents alleged that the corporator does not always attend phone calls. Several calls made to BBMP officials remained unanswered.
