Sasikumar's wife attempts suicide by consuming poison
COIMBATORE: Driven by sheer depression, Yamuna, 30, wife of the slain Hindu Munnani (HM) spokesperson C Sasikumar, attempted suicide by consuming poison at her residence here on Thursday, a day after immersing her late husband's ashes in Sadivayal near here. Yamuna consumed cow-dung powder mixed in water at her residence in Subramaniyampalayam, police said.
“Around 6 am, she had gone to the bathroom. As she did not return for a long while, the family members on suspicion broke into the room and found her in a semi-conscious state,” police said. Yamuna was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Thudiyalur, where she is undergoing treatment at the ICU. However, doctors said that her condition is stable and that she is out of danger.
Her relatives, who gathered at the hospital, told police that she was in deep grief over the loss of her husband. Senior BJP leaders, including Union minister, Pon Radhakrishnan and H. Raja called on her at the residence following the brutal murder.
It was only on Wednesday, the ashes of the mortal remains of Sasikumar were immersed in a river near Alandurai. He was chased and done to death by four unidentified persons on September 22, triggering widespread communal unrest in Coimbatore.
As the special teams of police probing the murder could not make any headway, the CB-CID took over the case. And for the second consecutive day, DGP Karan Sinha chaired a meeting with police officials at the commissioner's office and reviewed the progress of the investigations. Speaking to journalists, Karan Sinha said that the assailants will be nabbed in a few days.
“We have got some vital clues and assailants will be caught soon. The police have done an excellent job and the CB-CID will further help them out in cracking the case,” he said.
