Rally today for speedy probe into Kalburgi murder
Hubballi: A year may have passed since his murder, but a sense of mourning still fills the home of the late rationalist and scholar, Dr. M M Kalburgi. His wife, Umadevi, has not yet recovered from the shock of seeing him gunned down at his own doorstep, says his family, which is upset at the delay in finding his killers.
While intellectuals from around the country are coming together on Tuesday to launch a movement to put pressure on the government to fast track the investigation into his murder on the occasion of his death anniversary, his family remains hopeful that the two unidentified men, who shot him dead on August 30 last year will be booked sooner than later. "We are relying on CID and local police to find the youths, who have killed my father. But the government has to take this case seriously as a year has gone by. It will lose people's trust if it fails to crack the case,” said Srivijay, son of the late scholar.
Recalling that home minister, G Parameshwar had claimed on assuming office that the investigating agencies had come across some clues in the case, the family deplores there has been no progress since. The family is now working with his supporters on a website highlighting the professor's works and presenting his biography.
Meanwhile, progressive thinkers, writers and social activists are expected to take part in Tuesday’s rally for speedy investigation into the murder, which many suspect may have been carried out by religious fundamentalist groups opposed to the late professor's rationalist views.
