Kadapa: National Cadet Corps (NCC) is set for a giant forward leap as it is being made a subject in degree courses.
NCC that came into force in 1948 across the country began in Kadapa district 1957 and was closed in 1964. It was revived in 1979 under the name ‘30th Andhra Battalion’. Currently, thousands of students through this battalion have joined NCC. However, due to inadequate seats, some students were denied the opportunity to join NCC.
As part of the National Education Policy (NEP), the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the state government are making various changes in degree education. As part of this, four-year degree courses are being undertaken. The UGC has issued directives to include NCC as a subject in all degree courses. In addition, instructions were received from the Director General to design the course under the auspices of the NCC Director General and to see to it that the NCC course is introduced in colleges under their respective battalions.
Kadapa 30th Battalion Commandant Colonel Dinesh Kumar Jha met varsity Vice-Chancellor seeking introduction of NCC as an elective credit course in degree colleges under Yogi Vemana University, which is likely to incorporate the same in the 2021-22 academic year. The syllabus is designed to have 24 credit points for six semesters, according to the Choice Based Credit System under NEP-2020.
Yogi Vemana University VC, Professor Munagala Surya Kalavati said that colleges and those affiliated were determined to implement NCC as a degree subject. The successful students will get one per cent reservation academically, preferably in the army. According to the guidelines of the Union HRD ministry and UGC, implementation of the subject will be discussed in the next University governing body meeting.
Col Jha said, "We are introducing NCC as an elective subject in degree courses as per UGC guidelines."
