PIL on Nagawara’s rajakaluve encroachment: Karnataka high court sends notice
Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has issued a notice to the BBMP following a PIL filed by city-based NGO Samarpan, stating that a storm water drainage in parts of Nagawara village has been encroached.
It states that the construction in some parts of Nagawara village, Kasaba Hobli and Bengaluru North has blocked the storm water drains which do not continue further.
It submitted that in September 2014, Bengaluru received 89.6mm of rain in one hour between 7.30 pm to 8.30pm. On July 29, 2016, several parts of Bengaluru were flooded because of heavy rain and on August 14 and 15 of 2017, half of Bengaluru was submerged because of overflowing storm water drains as the City received more than 180mm of rainfall. In October 2017, Bengaluru received almost 90 cm of rain in one day and total rainfall exceeded more than 1,100 mm from July 2017 to October 2017.
It also states that because of encroachments in the lakebed area and rajakaluve/storm water drains, water enters houses in low-lying areas and this problem has existed for the last two decades.
