Kottayam: Re-postmortem hints at torture
Kottayam: The re-postmortem on the body of custodial torture victim Rajkumar of Idukki on Monday found more injuries on the back side of the chest, stomach and thigh.
The re-postmortem was held at the Kanjirapally general hospital as per the instructions of the judicial commission hea-ded by Justice K. Narayana Kurup. He had suggested that there were la-pses in the first postmo-rtem held at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital.
The body was taken out from the cemetery of St Sebastian’s church, Vaga-mon, 37 days after Rajku-mar was buried. He was allegedly tortured in custody by the Nadumkan-dom police.
Justice Narayana Kur-up and the first class jud-icial magistrate of Peer-umade were also present at the cemetery. Justice Narayana Kurup told reporters that there were injuries on the thigh and hip suggesting that the legs were forcibly stretc-hed. More internal orga-ns and bones were sent for chemical examinati-on and DNA test, he said.
In the first postmortem, the history of the inju-ries was not recorded. Moreover, the internal organs were not taken for detailed examination. The postmortem report then said that the injur-ies on the ribs of Rajku-mar occurred after giving CPR at the time of his death at Peerumade tal-uk hospital. The commi-ssion is also investigating whether Rajkumar sustained fractures in his ribs due to police torture and whether he was manhandled in the Peeru-made sub-jail.
The body was taken to the postmortem room of the Kanjirapally general hospital by 4. 10 p.m. and the procedures lasted till 7 p.m. The body was later taken back to Vagamon for burial.
The procedures were conducted by police surgeons Dr P.B. Gujral of Palakkad district hospital, Dr A.K. Unmesh of Government Medical College, Ernakulam, and Dr K. Prasannan of Government Medical College, Kozhikode.
