The accident occurred at 1 am on Saturday.

Hyderabad: In the first fatal road accident of the year on Tank Bund, two students were killed and a thrid was gravely injured when they were thrown off their speeding two-wheeler while reportedly trying to avoid a pedestrian. They were not wearing helmets.

The accident occurred at 1 am on Saturday. The victims were identified as intermediate students K. Vijay, 18, and Sai Manoj. Raisahab Yadav, 17, diploma student of a government college, survived. They were residents of MN Reddy Nagar of Chintal.

A Gandhinagar police official said that the trio told their families that they were going to a friend’s birthday party and took off on a ride when the accident occurred. Police said they would have survived if had they worn helmets.

Vijay and Manoj succumbed to their injuries undergoing treatment while Raisahab slipped into a coma and was taken to a private hospital in Balanagar, Gandhinagar inspector R. Srinivas. He said Vijay had taken his father motorcycle and picked up Manoj and Raisahab. When they reached Tank Bund, Vijay started speeding when he noticed a pedestrian crossing the well-lit road near the Kandukuri Vireshalingam statue.

Vijay swerved and lost control of the motorcycle, which skidded on the road and threw off the three.

Police is checking whether they possessed a driving licence. “Vijay’s father said his son took out the bike without their notice on Saturday,” Srinivas said.

The bodies of Vijay and Manoj were shifted to Gandhi hospital for postmortem and a case was booked under Section 304A (death by neglig-ence). Though several non-fatal accidents have occurred on Tank Bund, this is the first fatal mishap on Tank Bund after the ‘Love Hyd’ icon was shifted out, said Gandh-inagar sub-inspector M. Prasad. “The accident was the result of negligence of the students. CCTV camera images showed that they were riding at high speed.”

Mr K. Basawaraj, Vijay’s father, said that his son had a driving licence and knew well to ride a bike. “He told us that there is a birthday party on Saturday midnight. We did not notice him taking out the bike. The kids wished for a joyride and we would have allowed it if we knew we would have to face such a day,” he said.
