UGC diktat: Set up anti-ragging panel

UGC has also communicated that if any institution fails to take adequate steps to prevent ragging or fails to punish its perpetrators.

Hyderabad: UGC has directed higher educational institutions to set up anti-ragging mechanism systems in place, constituting of an anti-ragging committee and an anti-ragging squad to curb menace of ragging in institutions.

UGC has also communicated that if any institution fails to take adequate steps to prevent ragging or fails to punish its perpetrators, the UGC will take stringent action against the institutions.

The commission also directed institutions to conduct anti-ragging workshops and to install CCTV cameras and alarm bells at vital points in campuses. Institutions have also been instructed to conduct regular interactive and counselling sessions with students. This would also help identify trouble-triggers.

The UGC has also directed academic institutions to issue anti-ragging warnings in the institutions’ prospectus and information booklets and brochures.

The institutions are supposed to conduct surprise inspection in hostels, students’ accommodation, canteens, rest cum recreational rooms, toilets, bus-stands and initiate any other measure that would augur well in preventing ragging and any uncalled for behavior.

UGC has made four short films and a documentary film to counsel students on the ill-effects of ragging. The films are uploaded on the official website of UGC.
