Bengaluru: Talk, spend quality time with children, says expert

The session was conducted by author and clinical psychologist Salma Prabhu from Mumbai.

Bengaluru: Rotary Club Bangalore hosted a Parenting Seminar in collaboration with Merritude, a city based development centre for young adults, at Lavelle road on Saturday.

The session was conducted by author and clinical psychologist Salma Prabhu from Mumbai. The session stressed on the need for the right communication between a parent and a child in order to ensure holistic development of the latter.

Prabhu, who has over 30 years of experience working with children and young adults, cited examples from her book ‘Mom Dad Ur Wonderful’ and gave parents in the crowd, tips to good parenting.

"It took me long time to write the book. I would write it and change it and do it over again," she says laughing, "I think it was because I was also evolving as an author, a parent and a person. But when I see the response to the end result I think it was worth it."

During her address she said that though the education system in India makes it challenging for a child to get a wholesome growth, parents must adapt and learn to make their children's work as enjoyable as possible.

She spoke about the key methods to make parent-child relationship better. "Communication, spending quality time and making sure they are physically and mentally healthy are the three pillars of good parenting."

She added that these three pillars, if used effectively, can successfully fight technology addiction among children and young adults.
