Mysuru: Air connectivity to this city of palaces will be restored well before Dasara festivities this year, according to Mr Manoj Kumar Singh, director, Mysuru Airport.
Commercial flights will touch down here after a gap of two years.
He said that TruJet and Air Odisha would connect Mysuru and Chennai, the first set to operate a 72 seater aircraft in the morning, and the second, a 19 seater at night.
“We may have flights from other destinations too soon,” he said adding “Mysuru airport, Vidyanagar airport near Bellary and Bidar airports have been selected under the regional connectivity scheme under UDAN project. Since these carriers have signed an agreement under the scheme, they have to operate for three years. And the cost of air tickets, too, will be reasonable, at Rs 2,500 for Chennai.”
With night landing facility added at Mysuru airport, it has come in handy for airlines like Orient Jet to train pilots.
Besides, sky diving will be offered by a private company while the tourism department plans to offer aero sports at the airport.
A proposal to extend the runway has been awaiting an approval by the Union government at a time when the city attracts more than 30 lakh visitors through the year.
The airport was upgraded at a cost of Rs 82 crores by Airport authority of India in 2009, and inaugurated in 2010.
It remained unused till Spice Jet commenced operations in January 2013 but halted them in October 2014. Later, flights of Indigo connected the city with other destinations while the airport was used for full time by Air India between September 3 and November 17, 2015.
