New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed the nation in the 34th episode of the monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' programme and said the Goods and Service Tax (GST) is a historic achievement.
"It has been one month since GST was implemented and its benefits can be seen already. GST has transformed the economy. It is also an example of cooperative federalism. All decisions were taken by both Centre and states," Modi said in his address to the nation.
He said the successful rollout of GST in India is an example that will be analysed by other countries in the coming years.
The tax has created an environment of trust between traders, government, consumers and the Centre, he said.
Modi also expressed severe concern over the floods plaguing several states and assured the citizens that the Centre was working together with state governments to rescue people and provide relief.
"The government has deployed Army, Indian Air Force (IAF), paramilitary forces and NDRF to flood-hit states. A 24x7 control room helpline number 1078 is functioning continuously to deal with the flood situation," he said.
He added that insurance companies were being made pro-active to ensure faster settlement of farmers' claims and those who have suffered losses in the natural calamity.
Modi also spoke about taking the nation forward and helping it reach new heights. Speaking of movements like 'Non Cooperation' and 'Quit India', which helped the country win independence on August 15, 1947, he said that people had united under Mahatma Gandhi's 'Do or Die' call.
He asked the nation's youth to remember the 'August Kratni Diwas' of 1942 and said that a similar resolve must be taken to end corruption, communalism and casteism in the country.
"Today, we do not have to die for the nation. We have to live for our nation and take it to new heights of progress," he added.
"If 125 crore Indians decide to do something for the country, resolve like the one of 'August Kranti Diwas' in 1942.We can shape a new future for India in 2022. We have to make 2017 as year of resolve. Poverty, corruption, communalism, casteism must quit India. All individuals and institutions should resolve, come up with new ideas, contribute to New India," he said.
Modi not only hailed the Indian women cricket team's efforts in the World Cup final, but also praised the nation for supporting the team.
"I am happy how India took pride in the team’s accomplishment," he added.
