Centre to come out with scheme for Army porters

In the last hearing the government informed the court that it had granted a one-time cash payment of Rs 50,000 each to all the porters.

New Delhi: The Centre on Friday informed the Supreme Court that it had prepared a draft welfare scheme for the 12,000 porters who did casual work for the Army by carrying its supplies to high altitude areas in Kargil and along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.

Additional Solicitor General P.S. Patwalia, gave this information before a three-judge bench and said the scheme is expected to be finalized within three weeks.

The Bench was hearing a petition from some of the porters seeking regularisation of their services. In the last hearing the government informed the court that it had granted a one-time cash payment of Rs 50,000 each to all the porters who were working for 10-12 years and the court lauded the government’s gesture.
