MGR Medical University on mission mode to strengthen research

The university currently has 99,345 students spread across its affiliated institutions.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Dr. M. G. R. Medical University, here, has initiated measures to strengthen the research programmes in the university and affiliated institutions in several areas, according to Vice Chancellor Dr. Sudha Seshayyan.

“Measures are being undertaken to strengthen the research programmes... Tissue regeneration, genetic engineering potential and 3-D printing of vital bio-implantable tissue and material standardisation are some of the areas where significant research has been spear headed,” Dr Sudha Seshayyan said. Speaking at the university's 31st convocation here on Saturday, Dr. Sudha said efforts were underway to start appropriate joint programmes in medical law, medico legal medicine and genetic technology in coordination with certain other universities in the State.

The university currently has 99,345 students spread across its affiliated institutions. “With over 600 institutions of medical, dental, Ayush, pharmacy, nursing and various other allied health streams under its fold, the TN Dr. M.G.R. Medical University has set itself the twin objectives of quality education and applicative research,” the Vice Chancellor said.

A total of 22,929 graduates from various streams were conferred the degrees. Governor Banwarilal Purohit who is the chancellor of the TN Dr. M. G. R. Medical University conferred the degrees upon students on the occasion.

In his convocation address Chief Justice V. Ramasubramanian, said education does not end with the acquisition of degree. “It has perhaps begun,” he said. Recalling Hippocrates' quote: “life is short, art long, opportunity fleeting, experience treacherous and judgment difficult” the Chief Justice called upon the graduates to keep up the “fire of inquisitiveness and righteousness always burning in their hearts.”
