Tamil Nadu urges speedy setting up of AIIMS near Madurai

New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Health Minister Dr C. Vijayabaskar on Friday met Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and discussed the measures being taken for speeding up work towards establishing AIIMS hospital near Madurai. He also presented the Central Minister with a bouquet to express gratitude on behalf of the state for the grant of AIIMS to TN.

Elaborating various measures taken by the state government for meeting the conditions laid down by the Centre for allocating the multi-specialty/ high-tech healthcare institution near Madurai, such as providing land, roads, electricity and water, Minister Dr Vijayabaskar told Nadda that the Chief Minister had already sent elaborate instructions to the concerned officials in this regard.

“The (state) government has given a written assurance to the Centre on this”, said an official statement issued at the end of Minister Dr Vijayabaskar’s meeting with the Centre Health Minister, during which the state health secretary Dr J. Radhakrishnan was also present, besides senior Union Health Ministry officials.

Speaking to DC, Minister Dr Vijayabaskar said Tamil Nadu, along with Maharashtra and Kerala, has achieved the unique distinction of achieving the UN’s ‘sustainable development goal’ in reducing the maternal mortality rate (MMR) well before the target period. “This is the cause for celebration”, added health secretary Dr Radhakrishnan.
