Bengaluru: A day after the BBMP restructuring committee submitted its report to the new government, headed by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, the BJP corporators opposed splitting of Bengaluru into five corporations and registered their protest by flaunting the black badges.
There was commotion on Friday when the BJP corporators opposed the report and said the city built by Kempegowda should not be split.
Opposition leader Padmanabha Reddy said the BJP welcomes directly elected mayor and five year term for the post, but opooses splitting of the corporation.
He pointed out that Mumbai’s corporation, which was recently bifurcated, has failed to improve the administration. Hence Bengaluru should not be subjected to a similar kind of disaster, he added.
Forming five corporations will not help in solving the problem. Already the BBMP has been decentarlised into eight zones.
The emphasis must be on posting efficient and able IAS officials to get things done, Reddy said.
Meanwhile, Gunashekar, a Congress corporator from Jayamahal, said the BBMP council has been kept in dark with respect to restructuring of the committee.
The committee has proposed for a three-tier system with ward committees being a tier, the five corporations will be the second tier, while the top tier will be the GreaterBengaluru Authority. The structure of ward committees has been specified. The Mayor will be enjoy the administrative powers with a separate Act for the city, he added.
Such being the case the pro and cons must be weighed through a detailed discussion in the BBMP council. The other stakeholders such as BWSSB and police must be made part of the discussion, Gunashekar suggested.
He wanted the council to write a letter seeking permission to present the report in the council.
City Mayor Sampath Raj urged BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad to seek permission to hold a special meet.
Earlier, Reddy questioned if the government was not happy with the BBMP administration in the last three years. Multiple corporations will only bleed the civic body financially as it needs more staff and public delivery will be affected, he added.
