Kodiyeri Balakrishnan calls a truce on Munnar; CPI not to relent

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Thursday said there was no need for any controversy over the proposed Munnar meeting.

Thiruvanthapuram: CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Thursday said there was no need for any controversy over the proposed Munnar meeting on July 1 as it was being held at the district level. However, CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran said there was no change in his party’s decision to boycott the meeting. Earlier, the CPM leader said the meeting had been convened with the consent of the local leaders of all political parties including CPI. The meeting was not called by LDF. His statement came in the wake of report that veteran CPI leader and former deputy speaker C.A. Kurien and a district leader of the party had signed the petition demanding a meeting to discuss Munnnar issue.
Kodiyeri said there were no differences between the CPM and CPI over policy matters. The two parties were moving together closely.

He said if there are any differences of opinion on the issue it could be resolved through discussions. The LDF is committed to discharge the responsibilities bestowed upon the government by the people. When asked about Devikulam MLA S Rajendran’s statement that revenue minster had no right to continue in office if he cannot solve the issues of Munnar, the CPM leader said he was not aware of the legislators’ remarks. However, he said the CPM had not demanded the removal of an LDF minister.

Meanwhile, CPI state secretary said the issue whether revenue minister E Chandrasekharan would attend the meeting was related to the government. He clarified that what he said about the meeting was CPI’s official stand. Kanam said there were no differences between the party and the revenue minister on the Munnar meeting. However, he reiterated that the CPI’s stand was to boycott the meeting. The revenue minister also stated that Kanam had spoken about party position. When asked whether he would attend the meeting, the minister said that it would be known on July 1.
