Departmental action against teachers who committed errors in evaluating plus-2 papers.

CHENNAI: Teachers who committed errors in valuation of plus-2 answer scripts are to face departmental action soon. The Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE) is preparing a list of their names. Of 3,422 students who sought revaluation of their plus-2 answer sheets this year, over 2,000 got their marks revised. In the retotalling, more than 400 students got their marks revised. This year, DGE had given clear instructions to teachers before the start of evaluation of answer sheets that mistakes should be reduced. But the revision of marks remained more or less the same.

Sources in the DGE said a list of teachers who made errors is being prepared. Later, only teachers who made big errors will be called for an enquiry. They will be asked to give an explanation for the errors. If the reply from teachers is not satisfactory, then DGE would recommend action against these teachers for their lethargy in the work. Plus-2 answer sheets would be evaluated first by an assistant examiner. The answer scripts will be scrutinised by scrutiny officer. Chief examiners in the valuation camp also will look for mistakes.

Even after such scrutiny, many mistakes were witnessed in the answersheets. “Teachers are correcting more than 40 lakh answer scripts. The number of answer scripts which had revised marks is less than one per cent. The mistakes occur mainly because teachers were pressurised to finish evaluation in a short time,” said V.Manivasagan, state president, Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Post-Graduate Teachers Association.

“The award of marks varies according to teachers. So, the answer scripts which have a minimum difference of 10 marks can only be considered as a mistake and those teachers alone should be held responsible,” he added. Officials from DGE said action will be taken against erring teachers in due course. “The number of students who had their marks revised has not increased compared to last year. It’s only natural to have the difference in marks when two different teachers are correcting the papers,” officials said.
