Coimbatore: The Agro Climate Research Centre (ACRC) at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has predicted that the textile city will experience a deficit Southwest monsoon (during June to September) this season. Normal rainfall for the region during the period is 189.8mm. However, as per the predictions, the region will receive 175mm rainfall.
“Southwest monsoon season rainfall forecast for the districts of Tamil Nadu is developed based on the Southern Oscillation Index and Sea Surface Temperature values of Pacific and Indian Oceans by using Australian Rainman International V.4.3.Software at the Directorate of Crop Management, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore and is presented at 60 percent probability level.” a source from the ACAR at the university said. Last year during the same period, the region received a long-term mean rainfall of 210 mm.
Of the 32 districts in the state, a majority of 25 districts are expected to less than normal rainfall while seven will receive above average rainfall according to the predictions.
