Kodagu: Mock drill on to counter deluge

Floating bridges, motorboats used to rescue people, give first aid and shift them to hospitals & relief centres.

Mysuru: With the monsoon approaching, the Kodagu district administration is taking no chances in the backdrop of the disastrous floods and landslides that had accompanied it last year, claiming lives and damaging property.

Making sure that it is not caught off guard this time, the district administration conducted a mock drill with NDRF and other rescue teams at Hebbatgeri and Hatti hole in Kodagu on Wednesday to prepare for any emergency that may arise these monsoons.

Besides the National Disaster Response Force, teams of the SDRF, the Dogra regiment of the Indian army, police, fire and emergency services, civil defence, the rapid action force, NCC, telecom, revenue, health and all other government departments participated in the mock drill.

Ropes, floating bridges, motorboats and more were used to conduct the mock rescues of people , give them first aid and shift them to hospitals or relief camps. Drones were also used for search and rescue operations. The drill was led by Kodagu deputy commissioner, Annies Kanmani Joy, superintendent of police, Dr Suman D Pennekar, zilla panchayat CEO, K Lakshmi Priya and others.

Kodagu DC Ms Annies Kanmani Joy said all precautions had been taken to handle any emergency in the district. "The NDRF team, which arrived on May 24, will be stationed in Kodagu till the end of August. We have already identified 55 locations to set up relief camps," she revealed, adding that as many as 105 sensitive places that could suffer in the rain, had been identified as well.
