Bengaluru: High tension lines: BBMP to map city’s trouble spots

“We already have a plan to lay such cables underground, but this needs to be discussed with Bescom and BBMP.

Bengaluru: In the wake of recent electrocution incidents, the BBMP has issued circular seeking details of the buildings or houses, which are located close to 65 KV power lines and high tension lines.

The circular also stated that the any house construction activity close to such lines should be immediately stopped until the officials concerned examine the spot and provide clearance.

A senior BBMP officer said the circular was issued after Mayor Gangambike, along with other officials, visited a spot where an electrocution had taken place.

It was also found that several buildings and houses have been constructed in such a way that they are just an arm’s length from high tension lines, thereby posing a serious risk to its occupants.

“We have sent the circular to all the officers across the seven zones of the city. The details of the houses or buildings located close to high tension lines should be provided to us and we along with the Bescom and KPTCL officials will examine the place and take suitable precautionary measures to ensure that no untoward incident takes place,” the officer added.

The officer also mentioned that soon a meeting will be held with Bescom and KPTCL officials and they will discuss ways to adopt safety measures, wherever high tensions lines are passing over buildings and houses.

When asked if there was a deadline for house and building owners to comply with new norms, the officer replied that it will be fixed in the coming week.

According to a senior KPTCL officer, they are even toying with the idea of laying high tension cables underground, which will avoid such incidents in future.

“We already have a plan to lay such cables underground, but this needs to be discussed with Bescom and BBMP. Later we can place the proposal before the government,” he said.
