10 per cent quota in Gujarat from next year

The BJP-led NDA government announced 10 per cent EBC quota in January this year — only a month-and-a-half before the announcement of the LS elections.

Ahmedabad: Following the NaMo government’s decision to reserve 10 percent for the economically backward class (EBC), the Gujarat government on Wednesday announced it would implement the 10 percent EBC quota next academic year onwards.

The BJP-led NDA government announced 10 per cent EBC quota in January this year — only a month-and-a-half before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections. “As we have previously announced, we shall implement the EBC quota from the next academic year following which, all EBC students will receive reservation benefits in higher education courses including medical and engineering. Families drawing an annual income below Rs 8 lakhs who do not fall under any other reservation categories will qualify to avail this benefit,” Deputy Chief Minister Mr Nitin Patel said on Wednesday. This apart, the state government has announced a new medical college in Amreli, Saurashtra as a result of which, the number of medical seats in the state has increased from 4,350 to 5,264.
