Pass percentage dips with new syllabus

The CBSE announced the Class X, 2018 results on Tuesday.

Hyderabad: With the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation CCE policy scrapped this year and a new and revamped syllabus, the Class X results recorded a noticeable dip in the pass percentage as compared to the last five years. The CBSE announced the Class X, 2018 results on Tuesday.

The students who appeared for CBSE Class X Exams in 2018 are the first batch to have appeared for the Class X board examinations after the CBSE decided to do away with the CCE and reintroduced board exams. The Class X board exams were held by the CBSE after a gap of ten years. Between 2007 and 2017, the board followed the CCE under which schools were responsible for 80 per cent assessment while the remaining was with CBSE. This reportedly led to widespread manipulation of scores.

The board witnessed an outstanding performance in 2015 with 99.03 per cent of students acing the exam; however, the pass percentage has been on a decline ever since. Last year, the pass percentage was 90.95. In 2016, the pass percentage was 96.21. This year, a total of 16, 38,428 students registered for the CBSE board exams and the overall pass percentage is 86.70.

In 2017, the Trivandrum region scored the highest pass percentage with 99.85, followed by Madras with 99.62 and Allahabad with 98.23. This year, the top three regions are Trivandrum with 99.6 per cent, Chennai with 97.37 per cent, followed by Ajmer with 91.86 per cent. 27,476 candidates scored above 95 per cent and 1,31,493 scored above 90 per cent.
