Mercury touches 42.50°C for second time this May

Hyderabad: For the second time in May, the city recorded 42.5°C as day temperature, the highest reported so far. The last time was on May 1. While the all-time highest the twin cities have witnessed was 44.5 °C in 2010.

The highest in this season, for the state of Telangana, was 45.1°C recorded on May 21 in Adilabad. IMD attributed the rising temperature to the north-south winds. If the temperatures don’t rise any further, then 42.5°C will be the highest recorded in the entire summer month for Hyderabad while 45.1°C for Telangana, say weathermen.

Going by the extreme weather events report in the last decade, the highest temperatures in 2018 had reduced by a degree from last year. The maximum of 2017 was 43.2°C.

Experts say, summer a few decades ago was dominated by heat waves and the maximum recorded were between 45°C to 47°C but at present, the average temperature is around 43°C to 45°C in the state. This summer, there was ‘zero’ heat waves unlike the precious years.

The Indian Meteorological Department at the onset of summer predicted that the total number of heat wave days may exceed 27 however zero severe heat wave days were witnessed.
