Hyderabad: Cyberabad has a peculiar street lighting system: either the street lights are non-functional or they are switched on even in day time.
These LED lights are also seen glowing at Hitex, Hafeezpet and Miyapur during morning hours. And at several places like Hitec City flyover, KPHB road they remained dysfunctional at night.
Same was the case at PVNR expressway to airport where the street lights were glowing in the morning hours leaving the expressway pitch dark at night.
V. Vinay, social activist, said he has reported several such instances. “They often point to timer issues. I even observed this at GHMC head office. Because of the failure of lights at night, commuters may not see the potholes, leading to accidents.”
It may be mentioned here that GHMC took up massive upgrading of streetlights from conventional sodium vapour to LED which was done by executing agency ESSL. According to the corporation’s own officials, about 40 per cent of LED streetlights are faulty or have to be repaired in central, south and west zones.
A commuter, Hemant Sahoo tweeted, “Street lights are not functioning in both Hitech City and KPHB flyover since ten days.”
When contacted, officials said they are addressing street light issues instantly. “Timings are automatically being changed due to timer issues, consequently the street lights are glowing. We are addressing such issues immediately and nothing will be pending for ten days,” said an official.
This is all very well but the fact is that there is a problem with the functioning of street lights and it is attributed to the CCMS machine.
CCMS is Centrally Controlling and Monitoring System which is used to control (switch on and off) and monitor the LED lights in the city.
“There is a timer issue because of which the lights are glowing at the wrong time. The ideal timing is to switch on lights at 6 pm in the evening and switch off at 6 am in the morning. Since this is in the initial stages, it is failing in several instances. We are intimating the vendors immediately who are addressing the concern,” said a GHMC official.
