HYDERABAD: Hyderabad on Sunday night received 8 mm of rainfall, accompanied by strong winds and lightning. This followed a thunderstorm warning, which has since been withdrawn. Several areas in the districts too received rainfall: Pinapaka (Khammam), Adilabad, Bejjanki, Manthani (Karimnagar), Gandhari, Tadwai (Nizamabad), Ra-magundam among others.
The day temperatures were lower by 1º to 2º Celsius across the state. The highest recorded maximum temperature was 43.4ºC at Adilabad, followed by 42.2ºC at Nalgonda. The capital had it better, with the mercury standing at 39ºC on Monday. India Meteorological Department officials meanwhile said that the southwest monsoon had further advanced into some parts of south Arabian Sea, Maldives and southwest, southeast and east central Bay of Bengal,on Monday.
A report from Kochi said that the incessant showers witnessed during the last two days did not persuade the IMD to officially confirm the landing of the monsoon along the Kerala coast. Nonetheless, the monsoon is on the verge of touchdown. “Recent meteorological conditions indicate that conditions are favourable for onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala on May 30,” IMD said in its latest bulletin.
To the east, the deep depression that lay over east-central Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm and moved northeastwards. It lies 660 km south southeast of Kolkata. The cyclone will be called ‘Mora’. “The system is likely to intensify into a severe cycloning storm during next 12 hours, move north northeastwards and cross the Bangladesh coast near Chittagong early on May 30, an IMD official said.
